There Will Be Bliss

Sunday, January 13, 2008

After waiting almost two years, I had the joy of seeing "There Will Be Blood". I'm still wrapping my head around what I just saw, but at the same time I enjoying laying in the afterglow. I know I said the same thing about "No Country for Old Men", but this movie, No, this Masterpiece. It's perfect. Everything about it. The look. The feel. The sound. Everything. I have always been a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson. His movies are always about something much deeper then what we are led to believe. Boogie Nights is not just a movie about porno, Magnolia is not just a movie about the interactions between people, Punch-Drunk-Love is not just a love story, and There Will Be Blood is not just about the oil business.

There is a scene in the very beginning of the movie where the main character, Daniel Plainview is sitting outside in the cold. It's a very quick scene, and in any other movie it would have been quickly forgotten, but they way everything is set up in the frame, and the way Plainview is sitting there, shivering in the cold. It doesn't pop out of the screen, but rather it brings you into the screen. You feel like the coldness that Plainview feels. This sets up the entire movie because later on you learn Plainview is a very, and I mean very cold man.

I think PT Anderson has finally made the movie that will give him the credit and honor that he has earned. He focused in and made one of most perfect movies of our lifetime. read somewhere that this movie will be put up there with greats like Citizen Kane, and The Godfather. I think whoever wrote that was right. This is our generations The Godfather. Lets just hope we don't have to wait another five years for PT Anderson's next move.
